Summer Is Over – Now Is the Time to Think About IPL Skin Rejuvenation

IPL skin rejuvenation

Autumn is a practical time to discuss IPL for the appearance of sun damage, pigmentation, redness and visible vessels. Find out what IPL involves and why suitability needs to be assessed first.

Summer may be over, but has it left its mark on your skin?

Perhaps you’re noticing more freckles and pigmentation. Maybe those brown sun spots look darker than they did in spring, or facial redness and tiny visible vessels are becoming increasingly noticeable.

As we move into autumn, it can be a useful time to learn about IPL skin rejuvenation at iBeautify in Tunbridge Wells and find out whether it may be suitable for your skin.

What is IPL?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light.

Unlike a laser, which typically uses a specific wavelength of light, IPL delivers carefully selected broad-spectrum pulses of light into the skin. Different targets within the skin absorb this light energy, which means IPL may be used to address pigmentation and vascular concerns, depending on your skin, the concern being treated and your suitability.

It is one option that may be considered for the appearance of sun-damaged or uneven-looking skin.

What can IPL help with?

Following a full consultation and assessment, IPL may be suitable for concerns including:

  • Sun spots and sun damage
  • Age spots and areas of pigmentation
  • Freckles
  • Uneven-looking skin tone
  • Facial redness
  • Visible superficial vessels and thread veins
  • Redness associated with rosacea in suitable patients
  • General signs of photodamage and skin ageing

IPL may be considered when someone has more than one concern, such as a combination of brown pigmentation, redness and visible signs of accumulated sun exposure. Suitability and the right approach depend on an individual skin assessment.

IPL for sun spots, freckles and pigmentation

After months of increased daylight and sun exposure, some people notice pigmentation more clearly towards the end of summer. IPL energy can target melanin within appropriate pigmented lesions.

Following treatment, treated pigmentation can temporarily appear darker before gradually shedding or fading as the skin renews. The aim is not to remove every freckle or make your skin look artificially uniform. Any treatment plan should be based on the cause and appearance of the pigmentation.

IPL for redness, rosacea and thread veins

IPL is not only used for brown pigment. Selected wavelengths can target haemoglobin within superficial blood vessels, so IPL may be considered for appropriate facial redness and visible small vessels.

For suitable patients with rosacea-related facial redness and telangiectasia, IPL may form part of a treatment plan. Rosacea is a chronic condition, so we do not promise a cure. Treatment may be aimed at improving appropriate visible vascular signs and redness.

What about melasma?

This one deserves special attention.

Melasma is not the same as an ordinary sun spot or freckle. It is a complex pigmentation condition influenced by several factors and needs to be identified correctly before treatment.

IPL has been studied in the management of melasma, including as part of combination approaches, but that does not mean every person with melasma is an appropriate IPL candidate. In some circumstances, heat and light-based treatments can be unsuitable for pigmentation-prone skin.

That is why we will not simply treat every brown patch that walks through our door. If we suspect melasma, we will assess your skin carefully and discuss whether IPL is appropriate or whether another pigmentation-management approach may be more suitable.

Why start IPL in autumn?

Timing matters with light-based treatments. IPL-treated skin needs to be carefully protected from UV exposure, and recent tanning or significant sun exposure can affect treatment suitability.

Once the height of summer has passed, many people naturally have less intense sun exposure, making autumn and winter a practical period in which to plan a course of skin treatments. It also gives time to work on the skin progressively rather than trying to achieve everything immediately before a summer holiday or special occasion.

September and autumn can therefore be a good time to book a consultation and discuss a skin programme.

Is IPL suitable for everyone?

No — and this is important.

IPL is not suitable for every skin type, every pigmentation problem or every medical history. Treatment should not begin simply because you have decided you have “pigmentation”.

At iBeautify, we will assess your skin, discuss your medical history, medications, recent sun exposure and treatment goals, and determine whether IPL may be appropriate for you. Patch testing will be carried out where required before treatment. If we do not believe IPL is appropriate for your skin, we will tell you.

How many IPL sessions will I need?

There is not one number that applies to everybody. The number of treatments depends on what is being treated, its severity, your skin type, your response and the result you are hoping to achieve.

Some concerns may respond noticeably following treatment, while others may be better managed with a course. We will discuss this with you during your consultation rather than recommending a programme before assessing your skin.

More than pigmentation — IPL photorejuvenation

IPL is used in photorejuvenation to address appropriate pigmentation and vascular changes that may be associated with environmental and UV exposure. Depending on the person and concern, treatment may help the complexion appear clearer, brighter or more even.

For many people, the goal is not to look dramatically different. It is simply:

“I want my skin to look better without make-up.”

That is the kind of goal we can discuss at a consultation.
